All of this actually happened.

  1. c. 2016

    A guy finds a kitten on a road.

    Near the Yungas cloud forest in Bolivia. He takes it home thinking it's a house cat.

  2. 2017

    He gives up.

    After about a year he brings it to Senda Verde, a wildlife sanctuary. Everyone agrees it's some kind of tiger cat. Nobody can say which kind.

  3. Around then

    Researchers ask locals what it's called.

    “I don't know! My grandpa called it tilcayo, so I call it tilcayo.”

    Nobody knows what the word means. It stuck.

  4. 2020s

    Scientists sequence 38 genomes.

    Across the whole Leopardus genus, including this cat and one other tilcayo, a female that was rescued and released. Turns out the “tiger cat” is five different species. This one split off 1.4 million years ago.

  5. Sept 17, 2026

    Leopardus tilcayo is official.
